I firmly believe that the job of a book cover is to give readers a glimpse into the story that the book contains. Thus Uncover was born to allow me to unabashedly judge books by their covers. For judging purposes, I pick covers and note the impressions that I formed based on them. Then I compare them with the stories of their respective book to decide if they match up.

Impressions: A book depicting a book. Could this be considered a metabook of some form? Hah. Random musings aside, this cover looks like the literal interpretation of the title. Can’t get any more blatant than that.

Nonetheless, I like the flourish with which the cover is presented. The book is slightly out of focus, so the flower is much clearer, bringing out the contrast of the orange petals against the purple wall. Simplicity is pretty much key.

Looking at the cover, I expected contemporary romance when I picked up this book. Plot-wise, perhaps there is some precedence that the protagonist should look up to before falling in love herself. Kinda vague but it’s better than nothing.

MATCHING UP

SYNOPSIS

Jude has learned a lot from her older sisters, but the most important thing is this: The Vargas brothers are notorious heartbreakers. She’s seen the tears and disasters that dating a Vargas boy can cause, and she swore an oath—with candles and a contract and everything—to never have anything to do with one.

Now Jude is the only sister still living at home, and she’s spending the summer helping her ailing father restore his vintage motorcycle—which means hiring a mechanic to help out. Is it Jude’s fault he happens to be cute? And surprisingly sweet? And a Vargas?

Jude tells herself it’s strictly bike business with Emilio. Her sisters will never find out, and Jude can spot those flirty little Vargas tricks a mile away—no way would she fall for them. But Jude’s defenses are crumbling, and if history is destined to repeat itself, she’s speeding toward some serious heartbreak…unless her sisters were wrong?

Jude may have taken an oath, but she’s beginning to think that when it comes to love, some promises might be worth breaking.

VERDICT

There’s not a lot to go by based on the cover since it reveals very little more than the title itself does. Title and cover combined do seem to set the tone for what to expect. Since it is such a minimalist cover, I don’t expect it to be misleading. Basically, I would say it is an instrumental cover that doesn’t reveal too much about what to expect. Rather, it is a pretty addition to anyone’s bookshelf aiming to catch attention more than anything else.
